Officers shoot, kill armed man in the Bronx, NYPD says
NYPD officers shot and killed a man in the Bronx on Friday night after police said the man fired an airsoft pistol at an officer’s head.
Plainclothes narcotics detectives were conducting a separate investigation at Hunts Point and Seneca avenues when they heard an argument about 7 p.m. and a man saying he was going to his car to get his gun, NYPD Assistant Chief Philip Rivera said.
Police saw the man leaving a black Ford pickup with a gun in his hand and walking on the sidewalk toward detectives, Rivera said. One of the officers was wearing a police vest and another detective shouted, “Police, don’t move,” Rivera said.
The man raised his gun and fired once, missing the detective’s head, and both officers returned fire, firing 10 shots and striking the man five times in the torso. The man, who was not identified, was taken to Lincoln Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Rivera said.
A sergeant and the detective were also taken to the hospital to be evaluated, but were not injured.
Following the shooting, police said they recovered a Byrna HD airsoft pistol.
“For all intents and purposes, it looks exactly like a semiautomatic firearm,” Deputy Chief and Commander of Bronx detectives Timothy McCormack said.
The detectives were standing about 10 to 15 feet away from the man at the time of the shooting, Rivera said.
