Police shot a man in the Bronx on Wednesday evening after he opened fire on another person and led officers on a chase, an NYPD spokesman said.

The suspected gunman was shot on Loring Place, near West 183rd Street in University Heights, just after 6 p.m., according to police. He was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in serious but stable condition, police and fire officials said.

It wasn't immediately clear if anyone else was injured in the incident. An FDNY spokesman said only one patient was taken to a hospital from the area.

A gun was recovered at the scene and the investigation is ongoing, the police spokesman said.
