NYPD: Suspicious package at Grand Central subway platform was garbage
A suspicious package found Monday on a busy subway platform servicing Grand Central Terminal turned out to be a backpack filled with garbage, an NYPD spokesman said.
The backpack, found on the downtown platform for the Lexington Avenue Line, briefly disrupted service to No. 4, 5 and 6 subway trains, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority said. Trains bypassed the Grand Central-42nd Street stop until shortly after 10:15 a.m.
The NYPD said the suspicious package was reported in a 911 call at 9:02 a.m. and said emergency services and bomb squad officers were dispatched to investigate the find.
Responding officers searched the backpack and, the NYPD said, found garbage.
