New Yorkers better get used to the increased subway bag inspections and driver checkpoints near bridges and tunnels, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Tuesday.
The NYPD has no timetable on when it will scale back its increased presence across the city, Kelly said on WOR’s “The John Gambling Show.”
“We don’t like to put numbers on it or have a finite time when we’re going to change our tactics,” he said. “We’ll judge it accordingly, basically on an hourly basis.”
The city’s top cop said New York had to be placed on alert, especially since the U.S. found evidence in Osama bin Laden’s compound that al-Qaida was planning to target the city on the 10th anniversary of the terror attacks.
“This is the target, unfortunately,” he said of New York City. “We have to be concerned about this. And obviously a vehicle-borne device is something we have to focus on.”
Kelly asked the public to stay patient.
“These are some of the things we have to do. We understand it’s inconvenient. We ask the public to sort of bear with us,” Kelly said.
“Were sorry for the inconvenience and hopefully we can minimize it,” he added.
