President Barack Obama is just as concerned about having fun on his 50th birthday Thursday as he is about having funds.
Obama, seeking re-election in 2012, kicked off his half-century celebration last night at exclusive fundraising events across the country, including in lower Manhattan. Of course, he appeared only on a TV monitor at most of them.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo hosted a fundraiser at the Beekman Beer Garden along the East River, where tickets went for as much as $1,000 each.
Obama himself, however, spent the evening in his hometown of Chicago at a $35,800-per-person dinner and at a concert at the Aragon Ballroom, where about 1,500 people forked over $50 to be entertained by Jennifer Hudson, Herbie Hancock and OK Go.
Today, Obama is expected to host a bash for a few hundred friends in the White House Rose Garden.
“I feel real good about the 5-0,” Obama told NPR recently. “I’ve got a little grayer since I took this job, but otherwise, I feel pretty good.”
Obama is just the third president to turn 50 while in office since the dawn of the 20th century, the others being Theodore Roosevelt (1908) and Bill Clinton (1996).
