Officials: Brush fire put out near Kennedy Airport
A large brush fire that burned on the west side of Howard Beach in Queens has been extinguished, an FDNY spokesman said Saturday evening.
The spokesman said the fire department doused the fire at 6:21 p.m. and had received the call about the blaze near 76-08 156 Ave. at 4:19 p.m.
There were no injuries or structures damaged, the FDNY said.
The fire had blackened an area about 1,000 feet by 2,000 feet, he said.
The fire department set up tower ladders to pour water onto the fire and called in brush fire units. There were more than 100 firefighters at the scene, the spokesman said.
Despite Howard Beach's proximity to Kennedy Airport, a Port Authority spokesman said the airport was not affected.
"At this time we understand there is a huge fire over there, but it hasn't impacted arrivals or departures," the spokesman said.
