A couple of New York lawmakers want to designate homeless dogs as the official state canine.
 
Assembs. Micah Kellner and Linda Rosenthal were promoting the proposal Thursday.
 
Human rescuers and a pooch named "Sarge Wolf Stringer" were also on the roster for a City Hall news conference in Manhattan.
 
At the very leash — um, the very least — the politicians say their proposal could help promote the adoption and care of over 12,000 shelter dogs.
