A soldier shot an officer dead at a North Carolina Army base Thursday afternoon before turning his gun on himself, officials said.

The unidentified soldier stationed at Fort Bragg began shooting at around 3:30 p.m. during a unit safety brief, officials said. The Army Times said he killed an unnamed battalion commander.

The shooter also "slightly wounded" a second soldier before shooting himself. The shooter was alive and in custody on Thursday night, Army officials said.

"This is a tragedy for our community," said Col. Kevin Arata, a Fort Bragg spokesman. "Our prayers are with those who have been affected by this terrible incident."
