Oscar winning composer's son sentenced for killing girlfriend

A Manhattan judge sentenced the son of a late Oscar-winning composer to 25 years to life in prison Monday for killing his girlfriend in a SoHo hotel room.

Manhattan DA Cy Vance said Nicholas Brooks' killing of Sylvie Cachay at the SoHo House in December 2010 was one of the hundreds of domestic violence cases his office investigated that year. Brooks, 27, who is the son of composer Joseph Brooks, strangled his 33-year-girlfriend and drowned her in a hotel bathtub.

A jury convicted him of second-degree murder in July.
