"Argo" took home the top prize at the 85th Academy Awards in Hollywood last night, as the film industry scattered its highest honors across multiple movies.

In addition to Best Picture, an award handed out by Jack Nicholson and First Lady Michelle Obama, the Ben Affleck-directed thriller, set in Iran at the height of the 1979-80 hostage crisis, took home two smaller awards.

"It doesn't matter that you get knocked down in life ... All that matters is you get up," Affleck said in accepting the Best Picture award.

As expected, Best Actor went to Daniel Day-Lewis for his towering performance in Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln." It was a history-making win, earning a standing ovation for the first-ever actor to win three times in the leading category. Day-Lewis paid tribute to the "mysteriously beautiful mind, body and spirit of Abraham Lincoln."

Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for her work in the dramedy "Silver Linings Playbook." "This is nuts," she said.

Anne Hathaway sang her way to her first Oscar for playing Fantine in "Les Miserables," the sweeping film adaptation of the stage play. "It came true," Hathaway said upon accepting her gold statue.

Christoph Waltz was the surprise winner of the closest contest going into the ceremony. He took Best Supporting Actor honors for his turn as an eccentric dentist-turned-bounty-hunter in Quentin Tarantino's slavery revenge fantasy "Django Unchained." It was Waltz's second Oscar, after winning one for the Tarantino movie "Inglourious Basterds" in 2010.

Seth MacFarlane, making his debut as Oscars host, turned the telecast into a running joke about whether he would be deemed the worst Oscar host ever by the media today.
