The son of embattled college football coach Joe Paterno denied Tuesday that the Penn State icon was being ousted in connection to a sex-abuse scandal.

"No one has asked Joe to resign," Scott Paterno told the Associated Press after campus officials abruptly canceled a weekly scheduled news conference.

Citing two people briefed on conversations among the university's top officials, The New York Times reported yesterday that Paterno will be booted in a matter of days or weeks.

The elder Paterno, 84, last night reportedly told supporters outside of his home: "No matter what happens to some people, I'm proud of you."

Paterno has become engulfed in a firestorm following the arrest Saturday of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky, who is suspected of molesting eight boys from 1994 to 2009 and faces 40 criminal counts. Sandusky has maintained his innocence.

Paterno knew of at least one alleged assault in 2002 between Sandusky and a young boy in the college's locker room shower, and reported it to university administrators, police officials said. Critics say he should have done more.
