Penn State Trustees to let Paterno statue stand: Report

The Penn State Board of Trustees will let stand the statue of the late Joe Paterno to avoid upsetting alumni and students loyal to the deceased coach, according to ESPN.

The fate of the bronze statue was in question after Paterno's role in covering up child sex abuse allegations against Jerry Sandusky was revealed last week in the Louis Freeh report.

Former FBI director Freeh said Paterno "repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse from the authorities."

Weighing the decision of whether to remove the statue, some trustees were concerned with being pressured into a decision by the media, ESPN reported.

"You can't let people stampede you into making a rash decision," a trustee told ESPN. "The statue represents the good that Joe did. It doesn't represent the bad that he did."

Paterno died in January at age 85, two months after Sandusky, 68, was indicted on more than 40 counts of sex crimes against young boys. He was convicted on 45 of 48 counts last month.
