Piazza is set to join Mets Hall of Fame

Mike Piazza is still waiting for his inevitable induction into Cooperstown. For now, he’ll have to settle for the Mets Hall of Fame.

The team announced Sunday that the former Mets’ star will become the 27th member to be added to the team’s hall of fame. In addition, his uniform No. 31 will also be retired as part of the team’s Fan Appreciation Day, which will take place on Sunday, Sept. 29.

“Mike Piazza reinvigorated our franchise when we acquired him in May 1998,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon said in a statement released by the team.

“Mike is one of the greatest players in our history and we are thrilled to induct him into the Mets Hall of Fame.”

Piazza, whose 427 career home runs are the most all-time by a catcher, was a seven-time All-Star with the Mets and ranks first in franchise history in slugging percentage (. 542), second in home runs (220) and third in RBIs (655).
