The "Pizza Principle" is broken.

The average price of a slice of pizza in the city is $2.81, according to a recent survey from Zagat, up about 40 cents from this time last year.

The uptick breaks the mystical "Pizza Principle" that has shown over the past few decades, with shocking accuracy, that the average price of a single slice in the city corresponds with the price of a single subway fare (currently $2.50, although buying multiple fares costs $2.25).

Chris Walsh of Zagat helped complete the survey, and said the company also found that 51% (the highest in the country) of Northeast residents fold their pizza to eat, and that people in the region eat pizza about 4.9 times per month.

"This is our first survey like this, and pizza is a fun food, so we went with it," Walsh said.

"Pizza is universal. It's one of those gut-check foods; you kind of pause when you hear that someone doesn't like it," he added.

The survey, of about 2,000 people, also found that New York-style thin crust is the country's overall favorite type of pie.
