Pol highlights inaccessible Smith-9th station

Brooklyn State Sen. Eric Adams wants the MTA to commit to making more stations accessible to disabled and elderly riders.

Adams Sunday pointed to the Smith-9th Street F and G stop in Gowanus as a station that should have been equipped with an elevator during the MTA's two-year $32 million station renovation. He wants the agency to run a shuttle bus between the station-at 88 feet above ground, the world's highest-and the fully accessible Church Avenue stop.

"I couldn't believe that we consider this to be state of the art," Adams said. "If a station is fully renovated, the renovation must include an elevator."

The MTA in a statement said making some stations like the Smith-9th Street stop fully accessible for disabled riders would be "cost-prohibitive." The agency noted that customers who are unable to use the stop can take buses to accessible stations including Church Avenue, which connects with the B67, B69, and B35.
