Police Commissioner Ray Kelly tops the list to be the city’s next mayor, while Mayor Michael Bloomberg is on an upswing after taking a shellacking in the past year, according to the latest Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.
A surprising 23 percent of the 1,234 respondents want Kelly to win in the 2013 election – even though he’s shown no interest in the job.
“New York seems to like the idea of Kelly for mayor,” Quinnipiac polling director Maurice Carroll said in a statement.
Trailing him was Council Speaker Christine Quinn with 18 percent, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz with 12 percent and City Comptroller John Liu with 10 percent.
So far, only former City Comptroller Bill Thompson, who earned 8 percent in the poll, has formally declared he’s running.
Bloomberg told reporters Wednesday that Kelly is “one of the most competent people in this administration” but as far as politics, he seems to have “no interest in being mayor.”
Hizzoner saw his own poll numbers tumble following his handling of the December blizzard and the failed appointment of Cathie Black as schools chancellor, although now he’s back in positive territory with a 45 percent approval rating, according to the poll.
A mayoral spokesman said Bloomberg “is making the difficult decisions that are helping New York City come out of the recession faster and stronger than the rest of the country.”
