Postal Service to close 34 NYC offices in massive nationwide cuts

It seem the Internet is getting closer to stamping out the Postal Service, with the cash-strapped agency announcing Tuesday that 34 New York City post offices are among the 3,700 nationwide that will start disappearing this fall.
The Bronx leads the Gotham pack, losing 17 offices; Manhattan will be down six; Brooklyn and Queens will be down five each; and Staten Island will be out one.
Citing loses of about $8.3 billion this year, Postmaster General Pat Donahoe said the service has no choice but to slash.
"We are losing revenue as we speak," Donahoe told ABC News. "We do not want taxpayer money. We want to be self-sufficient. So like any other business, you have to make choices."
The service will cut about 5,000 jobs from its workforce of about 170,000. There are now 32,000 office nationwide.
The six Manhattan locations on the chopping block are:
- Roosevelt Island, 694 Main St.
- College Station, 140th Street between Seventh Avenue and Frederick Douglass Blvd
- Fort Washington, 158 Street and Broadway
- 26 Federal Plaza Station, Worth Street and Broadway
- Appraisers Stores, 47th Street and Fifth Avenue
- Port Authority, Ninth Avenue between 15th and 16th streets
