Duff Goldman is a busy guy. The star of Food Network series “Ace of Cakes” recently opened a second Charm City Cakes location in L.A., and he’s in the process of creating his own Duff-branded ice cream. And his schedule won’t get any lighter this weekend: Goldman is set to appear at six events at the NYC Wine and Food Festival. He recently spoke with us from Le Mars, Iowa, “the ice- cream capital of the world.”
One event you’re hosting is “The Best Thing I Ever Ate Between Bread,” featuring some of NYC’s best sandwiches. Why sandwiches? At food festivals, sometimes the food gets unwieldy — when people are trying to serve clam chowder foam at a walk-around event, it just doesn’t work. I thought if people just make little sandwiches, it could work.
What’s your favorite NYC sandwich? You know what I keep finding myself thinking about? Red Farm’s pastrami eggroll. I really want them to bring that to the event. It’s like a deconstructed deli sandwich stuffed in an eggroll. What could be more Jewish?
You’ll also be holding kids’ cake-decorating classes. Do you enjoy that? Those are my absolute favorite. You’re in the room with 50 children. I get to give them all this cake, candy and sugar. It’s me and all the kids just goofing around. The kids don’t care who I am. They’re like, “Whatever — give me some cake.”
And you’ll be at Burger Bash, too? My staff will be manning a milkshake island. We’re going to do some really cool flavors — one will be a mojito milkshake with rum. We’ll also have a chocolate-martini milkshake.
