Q&A with Joe Swanberg: Swanberg's big day

Unless you’re a film buff with a special affinity for the small, independent subgenre known as mumblecore, there’s a good chance you haven’t heard of Joe Swanberg.

But the 32-year-old is one of the most prolific filmmakers around, having directed some 20 shorts and features since 2005, movies such as “Hannah Takes the Stairs” and “Nights and Weekends,” which are credited with playing major roles in the ongoing DIY indie movement.

This is a milestone week in Swanberg’s career, as tomorrow marks the theatrical release of his “Drinking Buddies,” the first time he has applied his improvisational style to a movie starring genuine A-listers: Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston.

You can also catch him co-starring in “You’re Next,” a horror movie about a home invasion that’s getting a wide release Friday.
