Queens-Midtown Tunnel: Full service restored for Monday morning commute

The Queens-Midtown Tunnel is set to open Monday for regular traffic flow for the first time since Superstorm Sandy, the MTA said Sunday.
From 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., three lanes will be open into Manhattan.
"With this change, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel has been fully restored to pre-Sandy service," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Sunday.
The superstorm knocked out the overhead lighting system inside the tunnel, which meant that all lanes couldn't be utilized. Crews have been making incremental progress on the system, and it is now fully operational.
The tunnel was first re-opened on Nov. 6 to bus traffic while crews worked on the lights. On Nov. 9 it re-opened to cars, then on the Nov. 16 to trucks.
The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, however, remains open to limited service, as the MTA is still repairing its overhead signal control system, which was damaged even worse than the midtown tunnel's. It's unclear when full, pre-Sandy service will be restored to the Hugh L. Carey.
