Police are searching for a suspect who fatally shot a 14-year-old girl sitting on a Queens bus Saturday night.
Daja Robinson was struck in the head by a bullet after shots were fired at a Q6 bus that was idling on Sutphin and Rockaway boulevards in South Jamaica around 9 p.m., according to the NYPD.
Robinson was returning from a sweet 16 party. The bus was about 10 blocks away from her home at the time of the shooting. She was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where she died on arrival.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Councilman Ruben Wills, who represents South Jamaica, issued a joint statement in support of stricter gun laws.
"That a 14-year-old girl was shot to death for no other reason than having the misfortune of being in the wrong place at the wrong time is outrage enough," said Quinn and Wills in the statement. "But even more outrageous is knowing that the pain Daja's family feels is all too common."
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters that police did not believe Robinson was a target.
