Randy Moss retires after drawing little NFL interest

The Titans didn’t want him back. The Jets didn’t want him. Apparently, nobody was interested.
So Randy Moss, the walking highlight reel/ne’er-do-well receiver, announced through his agent yesterday that he will retire after 13 seasons and 153 receiving touchdowns.
Or will he?
Robert Smith, Moss’ former Vikings teammate, told ESPN that the 34-year-old’s announcement may just be a ploy by agent Joel Segal to garner attention for his client.
It is more likely that Moss will find interest during the season, once the injury bug starts depleting pass-catching units around the league. He has yet to file retirement papers with the NFL. Until he does, he is not officially retired.
Significant, too, was Segal’s recent characterization of Moss as in “freakish shape” after conducting two-a-day workouts in West Virginia during the lockout.
“He’s not just coming to be on the team,” Segal said in mid-July. “He’s going to be Randy Moss — a difference-maker.”
If he remains on the sidelines, Moss, 34, will be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame despite never winning a Super Bowl. But ESPN analyst Cris Carter didn’t believe Moss would be long for the idle life.
“I don’t think this is the time to retire,” Carter said. “He’s got all the accolades, the awards, except the Super Bowl. Once [New England and the Jets] were removed for him, he’s not playing today because he couldn’t find a suitor. I believe he’s got football left in him. I know for a fact there’s not 64 receivers better than Randy Moss.”
