Record number of New Yorkers commuting to work on bicycles

Forget the subway! More New Yorkers than ever are riding bicycles to work, the city's transportation department said Thursday.
Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan said the city is turning old parking meters into bike racks to accommodate more cyclists. A bike-rental program will also add 10,000 more bicycles to Gotham streets by next summer.
More cycle statistics:
- Commuter biking increased 8% in the last year, and was up 289% from 2001.
- 18,846 cyclists rode by six commuter locations each day this year, up from 17,491 in 2010 and 4,927 in 2001.
- More than 6,000 parking meter pokes will be repurposed for bike racks.
- 260 miles of bike lanes have been added in the last four years.
