Report: Young Ted Kennedy tried to rent a brothel in Chile
Before becoming the “liberal lion” of the Senate, a young Edward Kennedy would reportedly jaunt to Central and South America to consort with communists and prostitutes.
The revelations about Kennedy, who died in 2009 after battling brain cancer, were released Monday in FBI documents obtained by Judicial Watch, a conservative advocacy group.
“While Kennedy was in Santiago (Chile) he made arrangements to ‘rent’ a brothel for an entire night,” according to the memo, dated Dec. 28, 1961. “Kennedy allegedly invited one of the embassy chauffeurs to participate in the night’s activities.”
Kennedy was 29 at the time, married and an assistant district attorney in Massachusetts. He was less than a year away from his first term in the Senate.
The FBI memo also describes Kennedy’s insistence on meeting with “angry, young men,” communists and those with “left-wing views” in the countries he visited.
In Mexico, the U.S. ambassador refused to arrange such meetings for Kennedy. In Peru, where a similar request was made, a state official described Kennedy as “pompous and a spoiled brat,” the memo said.
The document doesn’t say whether the FBI believed the events involving Kennedy had actually happened.
Judicial Watch sued the FBI last year for a copy of the memo that was not redacted. The group said it will continue to investigate “why the FBI improperly chose to keep this information secret.”
Kennedy’s family did not immediately comment about the memo.
