The sperm of disgraced former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn was found on the uniform of the hotel maid who alleges he tried to rape her, according to published reports Monday.

The findings from a DNA test could damage Strauss-Kahn’s case, though his lawyers have already suggested in court that the forensic evidence is “not consistent with forcible encounter,” leading some to speculate he may use a consensual-sex defense.

News of the DNA finding followed the release of a statement he made to colleagues expressing “profound sadness” about what’s happened.

“I deny in the strongest possible terms the allegations which I now face; I am confident that the truth will come out and I will be exonerated,” he wrote in an email that was obtained by CNN and sent to staffers Sunday.

Strauss-Kahn, who was considered a frontrunner for France’s presidential race next year, was charged with attempted rape, sex abuse and other counts, and is out on a $6 million bail package.
