Rewind: DVD & Blu-ray highlights - 'Tis the season for horror

Halloween is fast approaching, and that’s no more evident than in this week’s chill-inducing releases.

We’ll start off with “Splice” (DVD, $28.98; Blu-ray, $35.99), with Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley portraying genetic engineers who splice together a creature.

“A Nightmare on Elm Street” (DVD, $28.98; Blu-ray, $35.99) gets reimagined with Jackie Earle Haley taking over for Robert Englund.

But the real horror is “The Human Centipede” (DVD, $24.98; Blu-ray, $29.98), one of the most disturbing films I’ve ever seen. A prominent German doctor, who specializes in separating conjoined twins, decides he wants to take his typical operation and reverse it, joining some wayward tourists. It’s not good or bad or anything in between — it’s just a very disturbing experience. Watch if you dare.

‘The Karate Kid’
Box office supremacy might be genetic, at least in Will Smith’s family. Junior Fresh Prince Jaden Smith stars in “The Karate Kid,” the remake of the classic ’80s flick with Jackie Chan. (DVD, $28.96; Blu-ray, $34.95)

‘The Secret of Kells’
“Kells” got an Oscar nom for Best Animated Feature, but not enough people know about this little gem, which mines Celtic mythology for a magical yarn. (DVD, $29.95; Blu-ray, $39.95)
