'Moneyball' pays off for more than baseball fans Full disclosure: I have been a diehard Oakland Athletics fan for more than 25 years. That said, it is with no hesitation that I declare that director Bennett Miller's adaptation of the Michael Lewis nonfiction book (subtitled "The Art of Winning an Unfair Game") is an excellent, incredibly smart film. Brad Pitt stars as A's general manager Billy Beane who, along with his numbers-crunching assistant GM (played wonderfully by Jonah Hill), are tasked with replacing three of his star players - Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Jason Isringhausen - on a shoestring budget. "Moneyball" is as much a business film as it is a sports film, and it does a great job of exploring the innovations that Beane and company used to create a competitive team in a way that will appeal to both hardcore baseball fans and novices alike.
