Rose Byrne is a gifted comedic performer.
That seems like a natural conclusion in the wake of “Get Him to the Greek” and “Bridesmaids,” but because the 34-year-old Australia native was once best known for starring opposite Glenn Close on the mega-serious “Damages” and for films like “28 Weeks Later,” it’s apparent that wasn’t always the case.
“I Give It a Year,” a sort of anti-romantic comedy out Friday, explores the short, difficult marriage of Byrne’s Nat to Rafe Spall’s Josh. It sounds like a painful portrait of domestic strife, but then you realize that the film’s written and directed by Dan Mazer, who scripted “Borat” and “Brüno.”
