A 39-year-old male was taken into custody after slapping former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani on the back at a supermarket in Staten Island on Sunday afternoon, police said.

The incident happened at a ShopRite, at 3010 Veterans Road West, according to police. At 3:24 p.m., the 39-year-old male approached 78-year-old Giuliani and “slapped him in the middle of the back,” police said.

Giuliani was at the supermarket campaigning with his son when the man slapped his back and cursed at him. Giuliani refused medical attention at the scene.

Late Sunday night, a Giuliani spokeswoman announced the former mayor would hold two virtual news conferences on his Facebook page starting at 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Monday to discuss the incident, which had left him "shaken."

A person who answered at the ShopRite location said all the managers were in a meeting and she didn't have information on the incident.

Giuliani, who was also the former U.S. attorney for the Southern District, served recently as personal counsel to former President Donald Trump.
