Same-sex couples were able to apply for marriage licenses on the city’s website for the first time Tuesday – and had the option of registering as a “spouse.”

However, for much of the day, the form hadn’t been updated and couples could only register as a “bride” and “groom.” Eventually, the new option was added to the City Clerk’s website.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg told reporters Tuesday that the city will “change everything to reflect the passage of a law … it’s time has certainly come.”

While couples can now apply, they will not receive their actual licenses until July 25 – 30 days after the Marriage Equality Act passed in the state Legislature.

Couples must then wait 24 hours before their official ceremonies at City Hall, according to City Clerk Michael McSweeney.
