Sandy G train tunnel repairs set to begin

The MTA will initiate the first of a dozen G-train station shutdowns this weekend to begin post-Superstorm Sandy repairs on the Greenpoint tunnel.
The tunnel linking Brooklyn to Queens sustained damage from three million gallons of salt water, which sat in the tube corroding power cables and rails. A similar, but full 14-month shutdown of the Montague tunnel on the R line will begin in August.
“Work to the Greenpoint Tube cannot be put off,” Carmen Bianco, acting president of <USAMNY>New York City Transit, said in a statement. “This is work that must begin now. While our customers will suffer some inconvenience, the payoff will be completion of this necessary work in the shortest time possible.”
For G-train riders, two shuttle buses connecting with the Nassau Avenue G and Lorimer Street L stations will make runs to serve the last three stations along the line: Greenpoint Avenue, 21st Street and Court Square.
The weekend closures will last from midnight Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday.
