Poll: Scott Stringer-Eliot Spitzer race is tight

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer has a slight edge over former Gov. Eliot Spitzer in New York City's Democratic comptroller's primary, but the race is too close to call, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday.

Stringer has 47 percent to Spitzer's 45 percent among likely Democratic primary voters, though the poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

"The numbers are moving for Stringer, but Spitzer has an awful lot of money," said poll director Maurice Carroll. Spitzer is funding his bid with his family's real estate fortune. Stringer has ample union and business support.

Quinnipiac surveyed 750 likely Democratic voters by landline phones and cellphones between Aug. 28 and Sunday.

Last Thursday an amNewYork-News 12 poll showed Spitzer with 46 percent support among Democrats likely to vote in the Sept. 10 primary, while Stringer had 43 percent support. That poll was taken Aug. 22-27.

The Quinnipiac poll showed Spitzer leads among black voters, 61 percent to 32 percent, and Stringer leads among white voters, 60 percent to 36 percent.
