Washington was a twitter Thursday over a gaffe by a Secret Service employee dissing Fox News in a feed normally filled with staid updates on recruiting fairs, office openings and sentencing for credit card crimes.

“(H)ad to monitor Fox for a story. Can’t. Deal. With. The. Blathering” read the tweet from @Secret Service, the official account for the agency known for protecting the president.

In a statement, the agency said, “An employee with access to the Secret Service’s Twitter account, who mistakenly believed they were on their personal account, posted an unapproved and inappropriate tweet . . . . The tweet did not reflect the views of the U.S. Secret Service and it was immediately removed. We apologize for this mistake, and the user no longer has access to our official account.”

“Appropriate internal follow-up” was under way, the statement went on to say.

The Secret Service only began tweeting May 9. The agency did not indicate whether the individual who let loose an emotion in an agency renown for the stoic inscrutability of its agents would be fired or disciplined.
