Millions of dollars in federal funds to protect straphangers are being slashed, just as renewed fears about the city’s security have been stoked.

“For the administration to announce these cuts two weeks after the attempted Times Square bombing shows they just don’t get it,” Sen. Charles Schumer, (D-NY), said in a statement yesterday.

Aid under the Transit Security Grant Program are being cut 27 percent, from $153 million to $111 million, with the money dedicated to protecting riders “from acts of terrorism, major disasters, and other emergencies,” according to FEMA, which manages the funding.

Money for the Port Security Grant Program, which assists in safeguarding waterways from terrorism, were reduced 25 percent, from $45 million to about $34 million.

FEMA did not respond to a request for comment as of press time.
