Serena Williams has kinda-sorta apologizing for her controversial comments surrounding the 16-year-old victim in the Steubenville, Ohio, rape case.

The tennis star, who was quoted in a Rolling Stone article as saying the victim “shouldn’t have put herself in that position,” Wednesday released a statement saying she is “currently reaching out to the girl’s family to let her know that I am deeply sorry for what was written in the Rolling Stone article.”

“What was written — what I supposedly said — is insensitive and hurtful, and I by no means would say or insinuate that she was at all to blame,” Williams said.

In the article, Williams was also quoted as saying, “She’s 16, why was she that drunk?”
