Shows, stars that deserved Tony nominations

This was an especially crowded year on Broadway, causing many worthy shows, actors and other artists to miss out on receiving Tony nominations. Here are some of the most egregious omissions.

1. 'One Man, Two Guvnors' - not nominated for Best Play
Richard Bean's farce, loosely based on the commedia dell'arte classic "The Servant of Two Masters," deserved a nomination based merely for its ingeniously staged dinner scene.

2. 'Lysistrata Jones' - not nominated for Best Musical
This cute and perky musical, which mixed basketball and college students with ancient Greek comedy, was better than "Leap of Faith," which was nominated.

3. 'Lysistrata Jones' - not nominated for Best Original Score
Again, even if "Lysistrata Jones" wasn't perfect, it had a catchy pop score. The Tony nominators went out of their way to insult this year's slate of original musicals by giving half of the nominations to plays with incidental music.

4. Tyne Daly - not nominated for Best Actress in a Play
Portraying soprano Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's drama "Master Class," Daly combined the character's tough exterior and ferocity with pitch-perfect comedic timing and the theatricality of a diva.

5. Hugh Jackman - not nominated for Best Actor in a Musical
His one-man song-and-dance show wasn't technically a musical, but Jackman gave the most electric performance of the season and not recognizing it is just plain wrong. At least he's getting a special award for his charity work.

6. Christina Kirk - not nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play
Every cast member of "Clybourne Park" was worthy of a nomination, but Kirk stood out for her duel performances as an uncomfortably chatty housewife followed by a brain-dead, pampered real estate agent.

7. Matthew Broderick - not nominated for Best Actor in a Musical
Sure, he had some trouble with the dancing, but Broderick proved that he can still win an audience over with his charm.

8. Eric Schaeffer - not nominated for Best Direction of a Musical
This year's limited-run revival of "Follies" was an unexpected critical and financial success. Schaeffer, who staged a really demanding musical and brought out so many exceptional performances, really deserved to be recognized.
