Single winning Powerball ticket sold in Florida

A single winning ticket for the $590.5 million Powerball jackpot was sold in Florida, though the winner of the record-high prize has yet to come forward.

Florida Lottery officials confirm that the winning ticket was purchased by an unnamed individual in a Publix supermarket in Zephyrhills, a suburb of Tampa.

The $590.5 million jackpot is the second-largest in history, but the largest to be awarded to a single winner. The largest Powerball jackpot in history -- $656 million -- was split between winners in Maryland, Kansas and Illinois in March 2012.

Saturday’s jackpot set off a spike in ticket sales across the U.S., with buyers purchasing approximately 80% of possible combinations, lottery officials said. Chances of winning on a single ticket were estimated at 1 in 175.2 million.

While the winner has yet to go public, the supermarket that sold the winning ticket will receive an $85,000 commission, a Florida Lottery spokeswoman told NBC.
