Sloan-Kettering embezzler pleads guilty to grand larceny

A man who looted Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of more than $1.5 million in printer toner to finance a lavish lifestyle pleaded guilty yesterday in Manhattan to grand larceny.

Marque Gumbs, 33, a former $37,800-a-year receiving clerk at the hospital, ran a con for three years involving unnecessary shipments of printer toner he then resold. He used the proceeds, said prosecutors, to shop in high-end stores such as Gucci, Fendi, Burberry and Louis Vuitton, buy a diamond-encrusted Rolex watch, rent an apartment at the Trump Plaza in New Rochelle, put a $50,500 deposit on a 2011 BMW X6 and travel to Las Vegas and Cancun.

Gumbs circumvented Sloan Kettering’s regular supply delivery process by having drivers drop off his orders at the curb, storing the printer toner near the hospital’s garbage area until he got off work, and then selling the cartridges.

Gumbs, who faces 2 ½ to 7 ½ years in prison, and forfeiture of his gains, will be sentenced August 8.
