Cue the weepy organ music — TV soap operas will be blowing even fewer bubbles this fall.
ABC Thursday canceled its long-running daytime soap operas "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" amid plummeting audiences.
The final episodes of the two shows will air in September 2011 and January 2012 respectively. "General Hospital", the second-most popular show in daytime TV, will remain on the air.
The two soap operas would be replaced by “The Chew,” a food talk show featuring Mario Batali, and “The Revolution,” a show focusing on self-improvement with Tim Gunn and Kimberley Locke.
As the era of the serials winds down, we look at key numbers in its sudsy saga:
4: Number of soaps that will be left. NBC’s “Days of Our Lives,” CBS’ “Bold and the Beautiful” and "Young and the Restless" and ABC’s "General Hospital"
19: Number of soap operas on the air in 1970
50M: Number of Americans who followed soaps in 1980s
1937: Year longest-running soap opera debuted, the now-canceled "Guiding Light"
