Some New Yorkers grumpy after early-morning Amber alert

Countless slumbering New Yorkers were awoken by an unusual buzz from their phones at 3:51 a.m. yesterday, as authorities sent out an Amber Alert emergency message that had some city dwellers up in arms over lost sleep.

The alarm, sent to cell phones citywide and elsewhere in the region, was issued to alert the public to the kidnapping of a 7-month-old boy by his by his biological mother, Marina Lopez, 25, from a social services building in Harlem on Tuesday afternoon. The boy was later recovered unharmed and the mother was taken into custody, the NYPD said.

"Manhattan, NY Amber Alert UPDATE: LIC/GEX1377 (NY) (1995) Tan Lexis ES300," the message read, without further details or context.

Those awoken by the message took to the Internet to air their complaints, with some saying it was an unnecessary intrusion to a good night's sleep.

"I hated getting woken up at 4am from an amber alert for the city #iwassleeping," tweeted Ana Gremli, aka @Anzyyy33.

"Woken up at 3 in the morning by an AMBER ALERT!!! alarm on my phone. If I see any Tan Lexuses in my apt I'll crack this case wide open," added Jocelyn Giannini, aka @jocelyngiannini.

Still, others were fine being woken up for such a situation.

"Why is everyone making a big deal about being woken up by the amber alert this morning? Y'all know there's a baby missing/in danger right??" tweeted Melissa Espinal, aka @Miss_Mel_E.

The alert is part of a system in place for phones bought after 2011 that automatically sends messages about emergency situations, including storm alerts such as those issued during Superstorm Sandy.
