Soul Asylum returns at Webster Hall

If you tuned your radio dial to Z100 20 years ago, chances are you would catch a heavy rotation of alternative-rock tracks from bands like Blind Melon, Gin Blossoms and Soul Asylum. The latter's Grammy-winning smash hit "Runaway Train" reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1993 and helped catapult sales of its breakout record, "Grave Diggers Unions," to more than 3 million copies.

And now, just as Soul Asylum rode the wave of alt-rock music from obscurity to international recognition 20 years ago, the band takes the stage at Webster Hall Saturday, as part of a second wave that has taken hold across the country: 1990s nostalgia acts in demand.

After the heyday of 1990s alt-rock, pop took hold and the likes of Britney Spears and countless boy bands pushed this music aside.

Then a funny thing happened, as the years passed: Suddenly, many of the forgotten acts from the early '90s began to re-form and take the stage across the country.

If you were to review the bills for the Summerland Tours of 2012 and 2013, it would read like the playlist of your favorite '90s satellite radio station: Gin Blossoms, Everclear, Sugar Ray, Lit, Marcy Playground, Live, Filter and Sponge.

And the trend continues this Saturday, with Soul Asylum co-headlining Webster Hall with Fountains of Wayne and Evan Dando.

For any 30-something in attendance, it will feel like flipping on Z100 while heading to school in the morning.
