Sources: Spitzer and wife have filed for divorce

Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer and his wife, Silda, have filed papers for a divorce to end their marriage of 27 years, according to legal sources and court records.

A filing in Manhattan State Supreme Court under the caption “Anonymous v. Anonymous,” filed Tuesday is noted to be a contested matrimonial matter assigned to Judge Laura Drager. The sources, who didn’t want to be named, said it involved the Spitzers. Legal experts have said that matrimonial cases are sometimes filed under the caption to keep the matter confidential.

Lisa Linden, spokeswoman for Eliot Spitzer, said, “We have no comment on this topic.”

A telephone call to an attorney representing his wife was not immediately returned. The filing of the divorce case doesn't come as a surprise. After it became known late last year that Spitzer, who resigned as governor in 2008 in the midst of a prostitution scandal, had started a relationship with Lis Smith, a former aide to Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Spitzer, 54, and his wife, 56, released a statement that their marriage had effectively ended. They have three children.
