Special election to replace Weiner likely set for September

The special election to replace disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner will likely take place Sept. 13 at Gov. Andrew Cuomo's call, the same day as elections for statewide primaries in local races, Politico.com reported.

The official date for the election will likely not be set until the state Legislature ends its session later this week, Politico said. The candidates to replace Weiner will be chosen by local party chairmen.

Council members Eric Gioia and Melinda Katz are thought to be front-runners for the Democrats, with Republicans likely to nominate Councilman Eric Ulrich or businessman Robert Turner, Politico said.

Cuomo's spokesman, Josh Vlasto, told Politico that he couldn't confirm the date and that he doesn't know when it will be.

Weiner, who represented parts of Queens and Brooklyn, resigned last week over a sexting scandal that began when he accidentally tweeted a lewd photo of himself meant for a 21-year-old Seattle woman to his entire Twitter audience.
