The injury-ridden and critically panned Broadway show is set to get major overhaul that will push back its opening night until at least June, The New York Times reported Tuesday.
After facing a wave of heavy criticism, numerous actor injuries and repeated safety violations, the show's producers reportedly want to shut down performances for two or three weeks to give the cast a break and hold new rehearsals, the Times said.
The $65 million production — Broadway's most expensive ever — has been in previews since November, longer than any show in history. A spokesman for the show said the opening night remains scheduled for March 15.
The Times said exactly who would oversee the show's new creative changes, and whether it would include director Julie Taymor, remains unknown. The report said producers have talked to at least two Broadway directors about taking over.
Despite its many setbacks, the show continues to sell tickets, making it among Broadway's highest-grossing shows.
The show’s original opening date was Dec. 21.
