Spurs have week off before NBA Finals begin
Just when you think they are too old, over-the-hill and destined to plunge from the elite echelon, the San Antonio Spurs storm their way back to their fifth NBA Finals appearance, all of which have come under the tutelage of head coach Gregg Popovich and led on the court by 37-year-old Hall of Fame-bound center Tim Duncan.
On Monday night, Duncan, along with guard Tony Parker, combined for 52 of San Antonio's 96 points to complete a four-game Western Conference finals sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies, the same squad that eliminated the Spurs in the first round of the playoffs two seasons ago.
"Since last year, I promised to him [Duncan] that we will go back, go back to the finals and get an opportunity to win the whole thing and I'm trying to do my best, try to be aggressive every night," Parker said after the game. "I think everybody on the team, we really want to do it for him.
"We win the West and now it's one more step. This is the hardest one."
San Antonio will now have 10 days off as they wait for either the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers to emerge from the Eastern Conference. Tuesday's Game 4 of that series ended too late for this edition.
The NBA Finals begin on June 6.
