New York's primary election day for state and federal races would be set for June 26 if a state bill introduced in Albany wins approval.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan), the bill sponsor, said Sunday that local governments would save a total $50 million if the date for state primaries were moved from September to June -- when the state must begin holding its federal election primaries anyway.

The Assembly will take up the bill this week, but could face opposition from Senate Republicans. The presidential primary is still scheduled for April 24.
