Staten Island man dies in fiery one-car crash

A Staten Island man was killed in a fiery crash in the Thompkinsville section early Saturday morning when he lost control of his car during what police said may have been a street race.

Philip Scrivano, 20, was driving a Honda Accord on Bay Street at about 90 mph - 60 mph over the speed limit - just before 2 a.m., police said. Another vehicle was following him, they said.

The victim's car went out of control, spinning counterclockwise and going 100 feet before smashing into a parking sign and utility pole with such force that Scrivano was ejected and flung into a gas pump at a service station. The car kept going and also struck a gas pump, which burst into flames.

Firefighters put out the blaze.

Scrivano was pronounced dead at the scene. A 25-year-old passenger who suffered cuts to his head was taken to Richmond University Medical Center, where he was in stable condition Saturday.

The driver of the vehicle that was following the Honda, Korey Swatz, 33, also of Staten Island, stopped at the crash scene and was arrested for drunken driving, police said.

Police said Swatz's vehicle was not involved in the accident and they did not know if the drivers knew each other.
