Yankees owner Hank Steinbrenner took a swing at his team Monday, calling them out for being more interested in their homes than in home runs.
“Some of the players were too busy building mansions and doing other things and not concentrating on winning,” Steinbrenner reportedly said at his team’s Tampa, Fla., spring training camp, which opened last week.
Although Steinbrenner said he wasn’t referring to any specific player, it was widely reported last year that shortstop Derek Jeter is building a palatial home in Tampa.
Jeter didn’t comment Monday.
The apparent slight is only the latest against the team captain, who complained he was being portrayed as greedy during contract negotiations last year.
