Study: Despite laws, drivers still using hands on cell phones

A shocking report released yesterday on the use of cell phones while driving found that there is still rampant use of handhelds behind the wheel.

The results of the study conducted by Consumer Reports found that despite state laws barring use of mobile devices, nearly all of the 1,026 people surveyed – 94 percent — had seen a driver recently talking on a phone and 64 percent said they had witnessed a case of texting while driving in the past month.

Some of the more alarming findings were about the attitudes of those who were under age 30. Here is some of what the young adults said:

— 63 percent used a handheld phone while driving
— 36 percent were very concerned about the problem of distracted driving
— 30 percent felt it was very dangerous to use a handheld phone while driving.
