“Cyrus,” from Jay and Mark Duplass (“The Puffy Chair,” “Baghead”) has earned a raucous reception in Park City — and for good reason.

Starring John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei, it’s the story of an unconventional romance hampered by the most awkward third wheel imaginable —the woman’s 21-year-old son.

Anchored by great performances (Hill, in particular, expertly reveals hidden reservoirs of sadness) it straddles the precarious line between broad humor and genuine emotions, winding up with a mix of moods that plays a lot like life itself.

Fox Searchlight will release the movie at some point this year, and yearend awards are not out of the question.
